Multimodal Donne Annotation: Stage 1

IV.

O, my black soul, now thou art summoned
By sickness, Death's herald and champion ;
Thou'rt like a pilgrim, which abroad hath done
Treason, and durst not turn to whence he's fled ;
Or like a thief, which till death's doom be read,
Wisheth himself deliver'd from prison,
But damn'd and haled to execution,
Wisheth that still he might be imprisoned.
Yet grace, if thou repent, thou canst not lack ;
But who shall give thee that grace to begin ?
O, make thyself with holy mourning black,
And red with blushing, as thou art with sin ;
Or wash thee in Christ's blood, which hath this might,
That being red, it dyes red souls to white.

  1. You may want to write what this source contains in terms of the information and how you are going to use it in your annotation. Since its citation says it is from a literary journal, I would say that it is credible, but for whom was it written?
    Since you are having a lot of trouble finding sources for your sonnet, you may want to consider looking at general sources for the Holy Sonnets as a whole. This sonnet may have similar characteristics of other sonnets. You could use the more general sources to support your annotation. Also, sometimes the more general sources of Donne's Holy Sonnets have a line or two for each sonnet. You may be able to find little excerpts pertaining to Sonnet IV.

  2. You look like you have a good start, but you might want to analyze your sources some more. It seems that you have found a book and a journal article. These should be credible and reliable sources since they are both probably intended for scholarly purposes. You should check to make sure the book is intended for scholarly purposes and not for a public audience because it may reduce the credibility of your source. I had trouble finding sources for my poem too. Maybe you should try looking for sources that just go over John Donne's poetry in general. You may be able to find some more sources that way. You can also look at some websites, but the information you find through the internet may not be as reliable. Maybe some of these comments made about the poetry will connect to the two sources that you have already found that relate to your sonnet. You may want to create more of the summary of the sources first so it is easier to determine how to relate all of the sources that you later fine. Well, in general , I hope you can find some more sources that work for your sonnet.
